In the fall of 1998, The Forest Service decided to ban nudity at Cougar Hot Springs. They hoped to solve some occasional problems. However, the prevalence of these problems was low, the causal links weak and the public outcry was swift and strong. Nudity at Cougar is overwhelmingly popular. In a day-long meeting with the Friends of Cougar on 12/7/98, the FS relented and announced they would let nudity continue for "at least another year." I'm happy to report that the allowance for nudity has continued for several years since we dodged that bullet. The Forest Service even erected a large official sign in 1999 that reads "Hot Springs Pools Clothing Optional."
